Dolphins running back Injury puts Jeff Wilson Jr. on the injured list

Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. will miss at least the first four games of the Miami Dolphins’ 2023 regular season after the team put him on injured reserve on Thursday morning.

Both of these predicted placements on injured reserve included offensive guard Robert Jones and cornerback Jalen Ramsey. The Dolphins’ game against the New York Giants on October 8 will allow for the return of all three players.

It came as a bit of a surprise when Wilson was put on injured reserve, but coach Mike McDaniel explained that it was due to a number of problems the running back was experiencing at the conclusion of the summer.

“It’s a midsection injury compounded by some finger issues,” he said. “We made the assessment he couldn’t protect himself and couldn’t be himself the way we know him to be. I wouldn’t be surprised if he would make a return this season. We will let his body tell us.”

Due to Wilson’s injury, the only healthy running backs for the Dolphins are Raheem Mostert and undrafted rookie Chris Brooks. De’Von Achane, a third round drafting pick, is still recovering from a shoulder injury sustained in Miami’s second preseason game, but  McDaniel anticipates that he will be fit for Week 1.

Salvon Ahmed, who left the Dolphins’ third preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars to be assessed for a concussion, avoided getting one and is still listed as day-to-day; McDaniel said Ahmed may return to practise as early as Thursday or as late as next week.

At the trade deadline of the previous season, Miami acquired Wilson from the San Francisco 49ers for a fifth-round pick. In eight games with the Dolphins, he gained 392 yards and three touchdowns on the ground while adding 94 yards and a score on 12 receptions.

In other news on Thursday, a source told ESPN that the Dolphins and fullback Alec Ingold had reached an agreement on a three-year, $12.2 million extension with $6 million guaranteed. He is also eligible for annual rewards worth $500,000 more. After this season, Ingold, 27, was slated to become an unrestricted free agent.
