Introducing a New AI Framework for K–12 Education Leaders

In order to give educators and state leaders comprehensive information and resources on implementing AI technology, the education strategy and policy consulting firm ILO Group has released a new “Framework for Implementing Artificial Intelligence in K–12 Education”.

“Emphasize the role of AI as a supportive tool, while ensuring that human direction, oversight, and quality assurance are maintained at all times,” the company stated, is the aim of each section of the 31-page guide.

There are various subsections in Part 1, “District-wide AI Areas of Consideration,” including:

Political: AI policy papers, surveys and polls conducted in the community, fake AI content, correspondence with student caregivers, the AI steering committee, and input from stakeholders;

Operational: AI instruction, AI access for students, the curriculum for digital literacy, and the schedule for AI implementation;

Technical: data integrity checks, IT support, third-party vendors, technology audits, and AI system performance; and

Fiscal: ROI analysis and AI budgeting.

Two subsections comprise “Department-Specific AI Applications,” Part 2:

risk profiles pertaining to operational and technological aspects, pedagogy and education, bias and privacy, and and compliance; and

Applications of AI in particular fields: enrollment, family and community engagement, special education, curriculum instruction, student support services, human resources, facilities and operations, and IT and technology management.

According to ILO, its guide is a work in progress that may evolve as new applications and data related to AI become available.

“The way we think about education is changing because of AI. ILO CEO Julia Rafal-Baer stated, “This isn’t about the future, it’s about the now,” and added that the framework document has been “stress-tested with input from a national working group of state and district superintendents.” Our mission is to arm leaders with the knowledge they need to make wise decisions that will influence education going forward.”
