OpenAI postpones the opening of its own GPT store until early 2024

A memo to developers obtained by Axios states that OpenAI will postpone the opening of a GPT store until early in the upcoming year. The store was supposed to open last month and be a place where people could distribute personalized versions of ChatGPT.

Why this matters One of the highlights of last month’s DevDay conference was the announcement made by OpenAI about custom GPTs and the corresponding store.

What they’re saying: “We are now planning to launch the GPT Store early next year,”OpenAI said in the memo. “While we had expected to release it this month, a few unexpected things have been keeping us busy!”

In summary, the customized GPTs can currently be shared directly through a URL.

Developers will be able to distribute them more widely with the store, and OpenAI has announced that it intends to split some of the revenue from ChatGPT Plus subscriptions with people who make well-known GPTs, though specifics have not yet been disclosed.

Next up: “In the meantime, we will have some other great updates to ChatGPT soon,” the company told developers. “Thank you for investing time to build a GPT.”

The big picture: In less than a week, the company saw the firing and rehiring of CEO Sam Altman, indicating a turbulent period.
